Bathroom Remodel

For the last few years, Angie and I have been dreaming about remodeling our bathrooms. Like a lot of projects around the house, it started with “someday” talk and Pinterest ideas, and eventually turned into real dust, tools, and late nights.

Last year I warmed up with the guest bathroom. I tore out the old tile around the bathtub, replaced the vanity, floor, and even the mirror. It was a full gut job, but it turned out pretty good.

Before
After

That project gave me the confidence—and maybe the courage—to finally take on the master bathroom.

Demo Day x 10

The master bath wasn’t just a simple refresh. It was a full-scale demolition.

Before

The cast iron tub had to go, which meant taking a sledgehammer to it until it was in pieces I could actually carry out. Every inch of tile on the floor and around the tub came out. Beneath the tile, I found some groovy 70s linoleum that probably hadn’t seen the light of day in decades. Both short vanities came out, and I even cut one of the walls down to half height to open the space up.

The Not-So-Fun Stuff

Once the walls were opened up, it was time for the real behind-the-scenes work. I had to move water lines, reroute drain lines, run new electrical, and even shift the p-trap and tub drain. It wasn’t glamorous, but it was necessary to get the layout we wanted.

Building It Back

With the messy part behind me, the fun part began—building it back the way we had envisioned. The shower is now prepped with the Schluter Kerdi system, which should keep everything waterproof and solid for years to come. I’ve got all the electrical finished, and my shiplap is painted and ready to go on the walls.

Almost There

It’s been a long journey from busted cast iron and hidden linoleum to this nearly finished space. One more solid weekend of work, and we should be wrapping it up. I’ve got a pretty good picture in my head of what I want, let’s see if I can create it. When I described my vision to an AI model, it produced this.

The toilet should be next to the white half wall and the shower next to the toilet.

Stat tuned.
