Seasonal
Relationships in the islands are seasonal. People come and go out of my life like seasons. Ironically, there is only one season in the islands… hot with a high of 1000 degrees. My friends always stay as friends, but the frequency of time spent with the friends comes and goes. I might see a friend and we trade phone calls and text messages for several weeks. We meet up for coffee, go for jog or even have dinner and then the season changes. Jobs, circumstances, opportunities and even desires change and paths don’t seem to cross until a random reconnection either on the street or in a shop and the season starts all over again. After living here for several years, we have met others who have noticed the same to be true about their relationships. Maybe it happens all over the world, but due to routines, we see the same people week in and week out and there is no time for the season to change. As you can imagine, I am writing about this because this week has been a week of a change of seasons. I have reconnected with 5 new friends this week. Guys that I have not seen or visited with in some time, have all of a sudden resurfaced. Text messages, in home visits and coffees are cranking back up. It feels like spring with new growth and excitement. Just as an example, the photo above is my friend Maroof. I haven’t seen him since his baby was born and she is 3 months old. They stopped in to say hi today. What a blessing… and a beautiful baby. Realizing the seasons, I try my best to live in the moment of each relationship. Its sad, but I know the season will change, people will get busy and the time will fade to a cold, empty and distant relationship. So live it up. Enjoy the people who consume your time today and don’t neglect seeing them… winter is coming.
