Vacation Day 3

Angie and I went for a bike ride before breakfast. We fired up the Keurig (yes we brought it with us) and enjoyed coffee while the kids slept in. After breakfast, we began packing up the campsite and headed north. There are some long desolate roads in southern New Mexico. We stopped in the alien town (Roswell) and had a picnic lunch at a park.

The GPS routed us down some small windy roads around the east side of the Santa Fe Forrest. We filled up the truck in Las Vegas, NM and then drove one of the most scenic drives of my life. The speed limit was 35 most of the way as we wound our way through the mountains up to Eagle Nest Lake. The temperature dropped 30 degrees. It took us about 6 hours to get here, but I’d drive the second half again if I had to.

We got the camper all setup and then headed into Eagle Nest to get a bite to eat. Unfortunately the town shuts down at 9pm. It was worth the drive though as we saw our first bear running across the town’s main road. (Sorry, no photos.) We went back to our camper and ate cereal and sandwiches before tucking-in to a cool night of sleep. The temperature dropped to the mid 40s during the night.
